Jerry Ramsey

Jerry Michael Ramsey, Sr., of Albany, GA, died Sunday, March 18, 2018 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Pastor Billy Sprouse will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the family residence. Born February 8th, 1966, Jerry Michael Ramsey began his life in Asheville, North Carolina. He moved to Lavonia, Georgia when he was six with his three sisters, Susan, Sandra, and Sherry, and his parents, Mary Francis and Herman B. Ramsey. He may have been the only son, but he found a brother in Thomas Maxwell in the third grade who will always be a member of this family. From Lavonia, he traveled to Truett-McConnell College and finally graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in June of 1990. Along the way, he met some new friends, who are still to this day as thick as thieves, and the love of his life, Susie, whom he married on December 8th, 1990. The same year, Jerry started his new job at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in the Radiation Oncology Department in Albany, Georgia and eventually worked his way up to becoming the Department Manager. He truly loved working with Dr. Charles Mendenhall, his partners, and his patients. The one thing he hated about his promotion was less time with the patients. Getting to know the people and treating them was the most important and fulfilling aspect of his job, which is why he chose to work in the medical field. He cherished the time he spent meeting patients and connecting with them over anything: sports, music, and especially hunting. His whole life, Jerry was an avid outdoorsman. He always said that any day spent in the woods was a good day, no matter what happened. He was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the local chapter president of the West Georgia Longbeards and sat on the NWTF Georgia Board of Directors. He made it his mission to preserve our wildlife for generations to come in order to keep the tradition alive. He passed down his passion to his two sons, Jerry Jr. and Tyler, as soon as they could walk. He even took other kids and new friends hunting whenever the chance arose. If it was to help another child to get his or her first deer or to help someone break a dry spell, Jerry never passed up an opportunity to take someone hunting. It was in his blood, but his family was his first priority. Jerry never missed a chance to be there for his family. He coached every possible sports team that his sons wanted to sign up for. Whether it was football, baseball, basketball, or the 4H shotgun team, he was the head coach. If he couldn’t be the coach, hell or high water wouldn’t stop him from the being the loudest, proudest, root-tootenest father in the bleachers. If you ever met him, you knew he never did anything half-assed, and sometimes his exuberant personality could seem embarrassing at times but that just showed how proud he was of his family, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. Jerry Ramsey was a devoted husband, a great, dependable friend, and a loving father. Love ya. Mean it. Survivors include his wife, Susie M. Ramsey, two sons, Jerry Ramsey, Jr. (J.J.) and Tyler Ramsey all of Leesburg, GA, three sisters, Susan Merchant (Boyd), Sylvester, Ga, Sherry Williams (Mike) and Sandra Chatwin (Bill) both of Lavonia, GA, a brother, Thomas Maxwell (Marie), Chesnee, SC and fifteen nieces and nephews who encouraged him throughout his battle melanoma cancer. Those desiring may make memorials in memory of Jerry Michael Ramsey, Sr. to the NWTF Legacy Memorial Giving www.nwtf.net or 770 Augusta Road, Edgefield, SC 29824.
