Virgil F. Halte

Virgil F. Halte, 63, died December 8, 2011 at Willson Hospice House after a brief illness with lung cancer. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on December 11, 2011 at Mathews Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home on December 12, 2011. Rev. Bobby Moye will officiate. Interment in Andersonville National Cemetery with military honors to follow at 1:00 p.m.

A native of Ft. Wayne, IN, Virgil followed a boyhood dream and joined the US Marine Corps in 1966 at age seventeen after graduating from high school. He served in Viet Nam and spent ten years in the Corps. He was a civil service worker at the MCLB in the supply / inventory management field for twenty one years. He retired in 2003 with thirty one years of government service.

Virgil was active in many organizations. He was president of The Georgia State Bowling Association and a newly inducted member of the Hall of Fame. He was past president of the Local NARFE Chapter # 643 (National Active & Retired Federal Employees). He was elected NARFE Georgia Federation President of Region III in May 2011 and served until resignation due to illness. Virgil loved all sports. He was avid cyclist and league bowler. He ran the Blue Angels Marathon in Pensacola at age fifty.

Survivors include his wife of twenty seven years, Cheryl Halte, Albany, GA, a daughter, Wendy Kallina Knighton and her husband Jeffery, Milledgeville, GA, a brother, William (Bill) Halte and his wife Wanda, Goodyear, AZ., three grandchildren, Cameron Knighton, Atlanta, GA, Garrett Knighton, Athens, GA and Weatherly Knighton, Milledgeville, GA.

The family is at the residence of Jean and Buzz Calek, 2213 Barnsdale Way, Albany, GA, 31707.

In lieu of flowers those desiring may make contributions to Albany Community Hospice, Willson Hospice House, 320 Foundation Lane, Albany, GA, 31707 in thanks for their compassion during this stressful time.
