Victoria Bishop Chiles

Victoria Lee (Vicki) Bishop Chiles passed away on August 28, 2025, at Addington of Meyerland in Houston, TX, after a brave struggle with Parkinson’s for several years. She was 80 years old.

Vicki was born in Memphis, TN, on June 24, 1945, to James Oliver Bishop and Virginia Dismuke Bishop. She moved to West Point, MS, at the age of 10 and spent the rest of her childhood there. She graduated from West Point High School with honors in 1963, and served as West Point’s Junior Miss. Vicki attended Ole Miss and graduated in June 1967 with a BA degree of Education in English. At Ole Miss she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.

Vicki’s career passion was teaching, and she pursued this fervently starting with her first job teaching at Oak Hill Academy in West Point, MS. In later years she taught at McGinnis Woods private school in Alpharetta, GA, and she taught several years in Valdosta, GA. After moving to St Simons, GA, she taught several years in Brunswick, GA. Her students loved her and she loved them. They appreciated the individual attention she gave each student. Many students said that Mrs. Chiles was the teacher that they knew really cared about them. She was named Teacher of the Year both in Valdosta and in Brunswick, GA.

After her years of teaching, Vicki moved to Charlotte, NC, a city she truly loved and enjoyed until she moved to Houston, TX in recent years to be near her son. Vicki had a great sense of humor, a quick wit that always allowed her to find something to laugh about. She was a kind, caring and compassionate person, perhaps too much so. She often joked that she sometimes felt guilty for passing another car on the freeway! Vicki was loyal and had close lifelong friends who will miss her deeply. She was honest, straightforward, and never changed, always an “open book” about her thoughts and feelings. She was devoted to her family members, especially her son and grandchildren. Vicki always had a very strong Christian faith, joining First Baptist Church in West Point at a young age. She loved music, singing and reading.

Vicki was preceded in death by her mother and father. She is survived by a son, Benjamin Franklin Chiles III (Julie Nicole) of Houston, TX; a brother James Oliver Bishop, Jr., of Houston, TX; a sister Lynn Bishop of Charlotte, NC; a grandson Jack Benjamin Chiles and a granddaughter Emily Virginia Chiles; nephews Kyle Bishop (Marta) of New York City and Will Bishop of San Francisco, CA; and great nephews Henie and Nico Bishop; her former spouse, Benjamin Franklin Chiles, Jr. of Starkville, MS; and her beloved caretaker, Lashanda Green.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2025 at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Dawson, GA, with burial to follow. Pastor Currie Spoon of First Baptist Church in Dawson will officiate.
