Thelma Nix Jones

Thelma Nix Jones, 84, of Albany, GA passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at her residence. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Pastor Gordon King and Pastor Neil Moore will officiate. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Pelham, GA.

She was born in Morgan, GA where she spent most of her childhood. She moved to Albany when she was a teenager and graduated from Albany High School in 1956. In 1959, she met the love of her life, Durel, and they married soon after. She was a devoted wife and mother, and she spent many happy years as a homemaker. Traveling (especially to the mountains), reading, and watching her “story” brought her much enjoyment.

According to her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Nanny,” she was a loving and giving soul, who made the best biscuits and fried chicken. As a person who never met a stranger, she enjoyed meeting people and spending time with her family and friends and was known to ask questions that others only merely thought of asking. She was sassy, talkative, inquisitive, fun, always encouraging others in their faith, and known to wear a bright smile. In the words of her church community group leader, "Her legacy of unwavering faith and tenacity and pure love for her Lord and Savior will live on in the lives of so many."

She was preceded in death by her parents Mose and Gladys Nix, her husband Durel Jones, her son Tim Jones, and four siblings Elward Nix, Foy Nix, Louise Stinson, and Wynelle Hare.

Survivors include her children, Terry Jones (Kathy), Statesboro, GA, Traci King (Gordon), Albany, GA, sisters, Janice Temples, Edison, GA, Sue Roberson, Douglas, GA, grandchildren, Dylan King (Lindsey), Tanner King, Addison Pollock (Athena), Mason King and Gracie Jones.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at Mathews Funeral Home.
