Shirley Lane Bowersox, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, at the age of 78. Born and raised in Albany, Georgia, Shirley lived most of her life in the heart of this community. She married an Air Force Airman Leo Bowersox, with whom she built a life filled with love and laughter over the past 59 years.
Shirley was a woman of many talents. She was known for her skilled hands as a hairdresser, always making those around her feel beautiful and special. But perhaps what she will be most remembered for is her incredible pound cake, a recipe passed down through the years that earned rave reviews from family and friends alike.
Above all else, Shirley’s life was marked by the love she gave her family. She was a devoted wife, a caring and nurturing mother, and a doting Nana to her grandchildren. Shirley poured her heart into making sure her family knew they were cherished every day, and her legacy of love and care will continue to live on through each of them.
She was preceded in death by her parents Robert K. “Pat” Lane and Lois G. Lane and her sister Kay Lane. Shirley leaves behind her beloved husband, Leo Bowersox; brother, Robert O. Lane; children, Lee Bowersox (Sherry) and Stacey Dickson (Jeffrey); and her treasured grandchildren, Ben Bowersox (Samantha), Bill Bowersox, Noah Dickson, Catie Bowersox, John Bowersox, and Henry Bowersox. She will also be remembered fondly by a host of extended family and many lifelong friends.
Shirley’s warm presence, caring nature, and infectious love will be deeply missed, but her memory will remain a guiding light for all who had the privilege to know her.
A memorial service celebrating the lives of Shirley and Leo Bowersox will be held at Mathews Funeral Home on August 28, 2025 at 10:00 am and interment will be on August 29, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Andersonville National Cemetery. Hale Bishop, Senior Minister of Skidaway Island Methodist Church will officiate the ceremony.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 28, 2025 from 9:00 am until the funeral hour at Mathews Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org
