It is with profound sadness and deep love that we announce the passing of Russell James Edwards, who departed this life on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025 at the age of 92. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Russ lived a life guided by faith, service, and unwavering love for his family and country.
Born on July 26th, 1932, in Trenton, New Jersey, Russ grew up with strong values rooted in hard work, integrity, and a deep belief in God. He carried these principles throughout his life, becoming a pillar of strength and compassion to all who knew him.
Russ proudly served his country — enlisting in the United States Air Force at 16 and rising to the rank of Major before his retirement in July, 1971. After retirement he began working for The City of Albany and retired in 1994 as The Director of Public Works. Russ always believed in the importance of duty, honor, and freedom. His patriotism was matched only by his devotion to his family, whom he cherished above all else. He found his greatest joy in the simple moments: family vacations, dinners, and the laughter of those he loved.
A man of deep faith, Russ lived each day in accordance with his beliefs. He was a member of Porterfield Methodist Church, where he found both spiritual guidance and lifelong friendships. His faith never wavered, even during the most difficult times, and it served as an inspiration to those around him.
Russ is survived by his daughters Lynn (David) Willis and Lori Bullington; his grandchildren Tracey (Kirby) Rust, Megan Cook, Glenn (Amy) Bullington, Shay (Adam) Riddle, and William (Liz) Bullington; and his great-grandsons Declan Bullington and Maddux Suggs, who will carry on his legacy of love, faith, and dedication. Russ was preceded in death by his wife of over 69 years, Zada Johnson Edwards in March 2023, and never once did he take off his wedding ring.
His cremains will be interred at Porterfield Methodist Church, and a private family memorial service will be held. The Reverend Josh Duckworth will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project or The American Heart Association, in honor of Russ’s enduring spirit and generosity.
Though he has left this world, Russ’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. His was a life well-lived and deeply loved.
