Nina Kay Fickel

Nina “Kay” Cates Fickel, 81, died peacefully at home on March 13th and has gone on to a better place with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 11:00 am at Crown Hill Cemetery.  Rev. Patrick Sebesta will officiate.

Kay was born in Albany, Georgia on Nov. 1, 1942 to the late James and Louise Cates. Her siblings were the late James “Russell” Cates and Jo Cates Eckhart. She was also proceeded in death by sister-in-law, Shirley Cates and daughter in law, Brenda Johnson.

Kay is survived by her husband, Rodney Fickel and her four children, Kent Johnson of Green Cove Springs, FL; Darren (Chimene) Johnson of St. George Island, FL; Lou (Woody) Hart and Stewart (Brandi) all of Albany.  She is also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and several special nieces and nephews.

Kay loved God, her family, her church and church family, animals, and playing golf and bridge. Her greatest passion was helping others come to the Lord. Kay surrendered her soul to the Lord over a half century ago. She was a devoted member of Sherwood Baptist Church where she shared the good news of God’s grace with her Sunday School class for over twenty years. She also shared the word at the Anchorage, the Sowega Council on Aging, nursing homes and treatment centers, and with strangers on the street and friends alike. Kay was not merely a hearer of the word; she was a doer!

Kay’s family gives their deepest admiration, gratitude, and love to Mary Gibson, Norma Jones, Virginia Crews and Sherry Perry for their loving care of Kay. The family would also like to thank Kristan at Phoebe Hospice and many other kind souls who have cared for Kay in these last years.

The family will receive friends at Crown Hill cemetery following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sherwood Baptist Church Missions, 2201 Whispering Pines Rd., Albany, GA, 31707.
