Melvyn Horton Carter, 92, of Albany, GA passed away at his residence. Memorial services will be conducted Sunday, June 15, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Jeff Hines will officiate.
Mr. Carter was born on April 29, 1933 in Shellman, GA. The family moved to Cuthbert, GA in 1944 and he graduated from Cuthbert High School in June of 1950.
While in the U. S. Army, he served in the National Security Agency from 1953- 1956. After his honorable discharge, he attended the University of Georgia from 1956-1960, graduating Cum Laude and was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma, Beta Gamma Sigma and the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies.
In 1959, he married Loraine Roach, and together they had three children, Shawn G. Carter, York P. Carter and Rahn Melaine Carter.
From 1960-1967, he worked for Abbeville Mills in Abbeville, SC, as a Senior Accountant. In 1967, the family moved to Albany, GA, and he worked for Lilliston Corporation, eventually becoming a Vice President and a Director on the Board of Directors.
He next worked for Gray Communications Corporation as their Personnel Benefits Manager, eventually retiring from the company.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting. After retiring, his passion became managing the Brown/Curry Hunting Club located in Randolph Co., GA.
Many weekends, and weekdays, too, would find him there enjoying experiences and stories of the hunt, but also the friends, food and fellowship associated with hunting.
Mr. Carter once said, "Among the things I take away from my growing up in Randolph Co., GA is my personal belief that out houses and Sears Roebuck Catalogs develop strong character and a lot of motivation".
He was preceded in death by his parents. Willie Ed Carter and Doris Horton Carter, sister, Betty Carter Morris, brother, Willie Ed Carter, Jr. and a daughter, Rahn Melaine Carter.
Survivors include his wife, Loraine R. Carter, Albany, GA, sons, Shawn Carter, Lawrenceville, GA and York Carter (Julie), Thomasville, GA, grandchildren, Landon Carter, Clark Carter and Bree Carter, brother, Harold Carter (Claudette), Coleman, GA.
