Mary Wood Mackey

Mary Wood Mackey, 100, died peacefully April 22, 2023 at Perfect Care in Americus

Born Nov. 9^, 1922 in Chauncey, Ga., she moved to Macon as a young child where she lived until her marriage to Shelton S. Mackey in 1941. After his service in the U.S. Navy, they moved from San Diego, CA to Dawson, where they raised their family and owned and operated Mackey’s Grocery until 1969. After selling the grocery store, they moved to Americus for 10 years, then to Lake Blackshear, returning to Americus in 2006. She loved and was deeply devoted to her family. She also made many dear friends in each of the places she lived.

She is survived by two sons, Shelton S. (Sandy) Mackey Jr. of Leesburg, Alan Mackey and his wife, Louise of Americus, a daughter, Jane M. Yeomans and her husband, Harry, of Decatur, nine grandchildren and their spouses, Linda M. Kersey and Alan of Naperville, IL., Sandford Mackey, III, and Carla of Fredericksburg, VA, Chip Mackey and Melissa of Warner Robins, Hill Mackey and Tammy of Leesburg, Justin Mackey of Dalton, Ansley Yeomans and Angela Riccetti of Decatur, Neal Yeomans and Beth of Chesterfield, VA, Laura Erickson and David of Auburn, AL, and Chris Hunter and Jennifer of Columbus, 22 great grandchildren and 5 great greatgrandchildren. A special thank you goes to her family of caregivers and staff at Perfect Care.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 to 6:00 at Mathews Funeral Home in Albany. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 12:00 at Macon Memorial Park in Macon, Georgia.
