Major Max Moore, 94, died on Sunday evening, May 29th, 2011 in Albany, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernaveral Barclay Moore. He is survived by a Son, Charles Arthur (Chuck) Moore, Panama City Beach, Florida and a Daughter, Dr. Peggy Lynn Moore, residing in Lee County, Georgia.
Born in Vienna Georgia, September, 6, 1917, Max Moore grew up among family from the wiregrass near Alapaha and Willachoochee, Macon and Vienna. Major Moore joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1934 and planted pine trees in Chehaw Park before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1937. Moore attended boot camp at Parris Island, SC, when the total strength of the corps was 17,000 men.
His military service included being present at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, the Battle of Midway Island, Tulagi and Guadalcanal. Major Moore left active duty in 1954, after the Korean War.
In his military service, Major Moore had accomplished the unbelievable which few Marines at the time had realized he had held every enlisted rank from Private to Master Technical Sergeant, Warrant Officer Grade, and three commissioned ranks, earning the true title of "Marine Mustang".
Major Moore traveled to Albany, Marine Corps Supply Depot, in 1955, and remained there until his retirement in 1967. He continued his career as a builder and retired in 1973 and he and his late wife, Ernaveral Barclay Moore owned and operated The Morrow Nut House and Bresler's Ice Cream Store.
Major Moore was an avid fisherman holding a National Bass Fishing Title and pursuing the love of fishing throughout America and abroad. He was a member of Porterfield United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held at the Mathews Funeral Home on Gillionville Road in Albany on Tuesday from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. Graveside services will be held at the Crown Hill Cemetery, Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. with full military honors.
