Lula Doris Stevenson

Doris Spence Stevenson, beloved mother, artist, and steward of the earth, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, at the age of 98. Service details will be announced at a later date. Doris will be laid to rest with her husband at Andersonville National Cemetery.

Born in the quiet mountain town of Troutdale, Virginia on August 5, 1926, Doris spent her early years surrounded by the natural beauty that would inspire a lifelong love of the earth. It was in Troutdale that she met the love of her life, George “Ward” Stevenson. They were married on May 19, 1947, and soon embarked on a life of adventure and service.

As a dedicated military wife, Doris traveled extensively while Ward served in the U.S. Army. Their journey together took them across the United States and Europe, experiences Doris treasured and recalled with fondness throughout her life. Eventually, the couple settled in Albany, Georgia, where Ward completed his service career as a Civil Service employee with the United States Marine Corps. Doris embraced her role as homemaker with grace and purpose.

She was a woman of sharp intellect and quiet strength, known for her deep reverence for nature and her commitment to ecological stewardship long before such things were popular. A gifted artist, Doris captured the world around her with remarkable realism in her oil paintings—portraits and landscapes that revealed both her talent and her love for life’s quiet beauty.

She is preceded in death by her devoted husband, George Ward Stevenson.

She is survived by her children: her daughter, Wanda Dolores Stevenson of Tybee Island, Georgia, and her son, Larry Kelly Stevenson of Las Vegas, Nevada, five grandchildren Demetrius George Simons, Sara Doris Cromer, Charles Kelly Stevenson, Galen Ward Stevenson, six great grand children and one great great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to an organization of your choice that supports nature conservation or the protection of natural resources—an enduring tribute to a woman who so deeply loved the earth.
