Leo Frederick Bowersox

Leo Fredrick Bowersox passed away peacefully in Buford, Georgia on July 22, 2025, at the age of 80, surrounded by his devoted family.

Born on October 30, 1944, in Jackson, Michigan, Leo was the youngest of four siblings. He grew up in Powers, Michigan, alongside his brother and sisters before the family later relocated to Chicago, Illinois. From a young age, Leo was known for his kind heart and deep sense of generosity, qualities that would define his entire life.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leo I. Bowersox and Elma Bowersox, his brother Jerry Bowersox, sisters Virginia Long, Judy Burnside and his wife of 59 years, Shirley Lane Bowersox who passed away on February 12, 2025.

In 1962, Leo answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. He served in the 1370th Photo Mapping Wing and completed overseas tours in Ethiopia and the South Pacific. In 1965, while stationed in Albany, Georgia, Leo met and married the love of his life, Shirley Lane. Their marriage became the foundation of a close-knit, loving family.

Leo and Shirley raised two children, Lee (Sherry) Bowersox and Stacey (Jeffrey) Dickson, in Albany, Georgia. Leo poured his heart into his family, always giving his time, energy, and love without expectation. He was a steady, caring presence, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Following his military service, Leo dedicated over 50 years to civil service with the federal government—first with the Department of Defense and later with the Federal Aviation Administration. He was highly regarded by colleagues for his compassionate leadership and quick-witted sense of humor.

Outside of work, Leo was a man of many talents and passions. He was especially known for his “secret” barbecue sauce, photography, woodworking and handcrafted jewelry. His hobbies were never just pastimes; they were acts of giving, often shared with family and friends.

Leo’s proudest role was as a grandfather. He leaves behind seven grandchildren and one great grandchild who brought him endless joy: Ben Bowersox (Samantha), Bill Bowersox, Elizabeth (Andy) Casteel, Noah Dickson, Catie Bowersox, John Bowersox, Henry Bowersox and Micah Casteel. He treasured every moment with them and took great pride in their accomplishments.

Leo’s life was marked by generosity, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his family. He gave without hesitation, loved without limits, and lived with an enthusiastic vigor. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the life he lived, the love he gave, and the legacy he leaves behind.

A memorial service celebrating the lives of Leo and Shirley Bowersox will be held at Mathews Funeral Home on August 28, 2025 at 10:00 am and interment will be on August 29, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Andersonville National Cemetery. Hale Bishop, Senior Minister of Skidaway Island Methodist Church will officiate the ceremony.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 28, 2025 from 9:00 am until the funeral hour at Mathews Funeral Home.
