Johnny William Mixon, Sr.

John William Mixon, Sr., 79 of Ft. Gaines, GA., died Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Southeast Health Medical Center in Dothan, AL. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Joe Pollock will officiate.

Johnny was born to the late Charlie and Ruby Mixon. He was a life long resident of Albany until moving to Ft. Gaines after his retirement. Johnny served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a fun-loving man who always had a joke to tell or something to make people laugh. Every day he brought joy to others by making them laugh and by encouraging them. Johnny enjoyed living at the lake and spent time fishing and working on his projects.

He served the city of Albany 31 years as a fireman, earning the rank of Captain all while owning and running Mixon plumbing on his days off from the fire department. He was a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church and donated his time and efforts to install the initial plumbing for the building of the church on Ledo Road.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two sisters, Billy Faye Wildes and Diane Davis and a brother Ronnie Mixon.

Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-five years, Sherry Mixon, his children Cari Howell (Marc Cooper) and Dr. John William Mixon, Jr., (Ashley), and his grandchildren, Mia Mixon, Carson Bass (Peyton) and Noah Mixon.

In lieu of flowers those desiring may make donation in memory of Johnny to Tunnels to Towers, 2361 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10306. or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
