James Arthur Cox

James Arthur Cox, 83, of Albany, died, Sunday, March 22, 2026 at Emory Midtown.

His memorial service will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at Avalon Methodist Church. Rev. Debbie Cone will officiate.

Born on February 2, 1943, in Dawson, GA, James lived a life marked by strength, resilience, and deep love for his family. He made his home in Albany, GA where he built a life alongside his beloved wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Cox, and their daughter, Heather Cox.

James’s strong work ethic began early, with his first job bagging groceries at the local Winn-Dixie. Soon after, he discovered a talent for flower arranging, a skill he carried with him throughout his life. Even in later years, he continued to share that gift by helping his church with beautiful table arrangements from time to time.

For 45 years, James owned and operated his own remodeling construction business, Cox Remodeling. He took great pride in his work. One of his proudest accomplishments was custom building his family home, a labor of love that became the heart of countless memories. Later in life, he passed down his knowledge and skills to his son, Steve, who went on to build a successful career of his own—like father, like son.

James also gave back to his community in his younger days as a senior Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts, guiding young people with patience, leadership, and encouragement.

He loved being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and enjoyed riding his bike, swimming in the summertime with Liz, and doing word searches in the newspaper. He cherished his quiet mornings with coffee, reading his devotional and the Bible, and he was a devoted member of Avalon Methodist Church, where he loved his church family with a full heart. James had a playful side—he knew how to cut a rug on the dance floor, and he shared many special moments dancing in the living room with Heather to classic songs. Together, they also bonded over watching their favorite movie series, Indiana Jones. James also treasured his time at Lake Blackshear, especially during Steve’s childhood years, creating memories that will be cherished forever.

James loved Christmas and all the magic that came with it, and he shared his big sweet tooth with Heather, who delighted in stealing treats from his plate from the young age of 2-something that never changed. A strong believer in Jesus, James lived his life with faith, love, and purpose, and he knew exactly where he would be headed.

James will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, and always having a quick sense of humor-delighting in making people laugh. His quiet strength, warmth, and enduring character left a lasting impression on the family and friends that he cherished.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Cox; his daughter, Heather Cox; his son, Steve Cox (Leigh); his brother, Lee Cox; his sister, Brenda Wintersole; his step-granddaughter, Anna Gerrish (Chris); and his three beloved grand-cats, Peaches, Karl, and Chili Bean.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Eugene Cox, step-mother Gladys Cox, his mother, Jimmie Clenny Cox Wall, his stepfather, Earl Wall, and his sister, Sara Kofoed.

James’ legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
