Jack Haugabook "Spots" Maffett, Sr.

Jack Haugabook “Spots” Maffett, Sr., 91, of Montezuma, GA passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025 at Lake Blackshear, GA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 1:00 pm at The Montezuma Methodist Church. Rev. Jonathan Beckum will officiate. Interment will follow in Felton Cemetery.

Mr. Maffett was a native and lifelong resident of Montezuma, GA. He was born on September 6, 1933 to James Daniel Maffett, Sr and Ruth Haugabook Maffett. Mr. Maffett graduated from Montezuma High School in 1950 where he played basketball for the Aztecs. He continued his education at the University of Georgia and graduated from Georgia Southwestern College. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Brand in 1952.

Mr. Maffett joined the family business, Maffett’s Inc. in 1954 and continued to own and operate the business until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of Montezuma Methodist Church, was active in community and served on the Board of Directors for The Bank of Macon County, First Atlanta Bank, and Wachovia Bank. Mr. Maffett was a scratch golfer, a member of McKenzie Memorial Golf Club and still holds the course record for the lowest score ever shot. At the age of 15, he was invited to play a round of golf with the Auburn Tigers Golf Team and was the low medalist. Mr. Maffett was also known as a great billiards player and would be challenged to matches by many. In his later years, he enjoyed his Jack’s Nursery where he planted and grew hundreds and hundreds of Azaleas and Box Woods. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Brand Maffett in 2006 and his siblings, Coach Jimmy Maffett and Marilyn Maffett.

Survivors include their children, Jack H. Maffett, Jr and Cindy M. Ponkey (Mark) all of Lake Blackshear, GA, seven grandchildren, Brooks Maffett of Atlanta, GA, Tripp Maffett (Nina) of Andersonville, GA, William Hicks (Erin) and Johnathan Hicks (Nancy) all of Twin Falls, ID, Tara Hicks (Nathan) of Dallas, TX, Tiffany Hicks (Taylor) of Pensacola, FL and James Hicks (Salena) of Huntsville, AL and nine great-grandchildren.
