Houston Ray Cannon, Sr.

Houston Ray Cannon, Sr. 85, of Albany, passed away surrounded by his family at his home on County Line Rd.

His funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Monday March 4, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Putney with Rev. Danny Evans officiating.  Interment will be at 3:00 PM, Monday, March 4, 2024 at Roberts Cemetery in Miller County.

Ray was born, August 16, 1938 to Stephen and Merle (Mock) Cannon, was one of six children and lived in the Hentown Community of Blakely.  Upon graduation from school, Ray joined the U. S. Air Force serving for four years as a Radio Communications Operator.

On August 11, 1957, he married Edith Merle Granger and they celebrated sixty-five years of blessed marriage and they had three children. 

Prior to and after the Air Force, Ray worked with the Georgia Department of Transportation as an Engineer for thirty-four years.  Two days after his retirement he went to work with Dougherty County Public Works as a Consultant.

His love of the Lord showed in his love for his family, friends, his church and church family.   He enjoyed cutting grass on his four acres, planting his garden, growing grapefruits to share with everyone, fishing and building things to make it easier around the house and shop.  Ray and his wife enjoyed two meals a day at the local 3 Squares Diner where they called him “Papa” and spoiled him to his delight.

Ray loved the Lord and was a devoted servant and attended First Baptist Church of Putney where he was a Honorary Deacon.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, brother Aubrey Cannon, sisters, Margie Cannon Bynum and Bessie L. Cannon Lisenby.

Survivors include his wife Edith Cannon, daughters, Pamela Cannon Long (Roger), Norma Jean Evans (Daniel), son Houston Ray Cannon, Jr. (Deann), grandchildren, Aaron J. Wilson, Justin R. Wilson, Christopher A. Evans, Jeremy D. Evans, Kristina D. Cannon and four great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brothers, Don Cannon, and Norman Cannon and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 10:00 to 11:00 AM, Monday, March 4, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Putney.
