Herbert Winston Thomas, 83, of Albany, GA passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 29, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Andrew Kornegay will officiate. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Born in Kaufman County, TX, to the late Alvis and Fannie Thomas on August 16, 1939, Herbert grew up as a farm kid in a loving family. His high school years were full of athletics and ROTC and were followed by four adventurous years in the Air Force. While stationed at Turner Air Force Base in Albany, GA, Herb met the love of his life, Myrna Walters, when he asked to borrow sugar for his coffee. They married on July 7, 1961, and moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where Herb worked as an engineer for International Business Machines (IBM) and was instrumental in the “space race” and Apollo missions. For the next 30 years, Herb and his wife owned and operated Dairy Queens. Throughout his life, Herb had many passions: family, travel, gardening, private pilot, Ham Radio operator, Civil Air Patrol, Albany Amateur Radio Club, and Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA).
Survivors include a daughter, Melanie Thomas Woodruff (David), Longwood, FL, son Monte Thomas (Tina Stokes), Lee Co., GA, and sister, Glenda Sadler (Buddy), Terrell, TX.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the funeral hour at Mathews Funeral Home.
