George Howell

Rev. George C. Howell, 85, of Albany, died Thursday, November 27, 2025.

His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Mathews Funeral Home with interment to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Rev. Grady Morey and Rev. Jeremy Howell will officiate.

Raised on a farm in Timmonsville, S.C., Rev. Howell pastored with the Southern Methodist Church for more than 50 years, leading churches in South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. The first in his family to go to college, he graduated from Southern Methodist College with a master’s degree in theology.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Croft Howell; his children, Lydia Livingston (Dickie), Rev. Jeremy Howell, Esther Griffin (Mark), grandchildren, GlynnAnn Brookerd, Tabitha Nelms, Luke Griffin, Emma Griffin, Will Griffin, Leland Howell, great grandchildren, Saydee Nelms, Skarlet Nelms, Danielle Nelms, Livi Ann Brookerd, his siblings, Bessie Broach, Martha Gibbs, Bobbie Joye (Rev. Carrol), Betina Buie (Jerald), Jimmie Howell (Rita), Henry Howell (Jean), Leon Howell (Connie), Margaret Kelley (Michael).

The family wishes to thank the staff at Viva Senior Living at Albany and the staff of Regency Southern Care Hospice for their kind and loving care.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday November 29, 2025, at Mathews Funeral Home.
