Gene Thomas Knight

With hearts anchored in faith and gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the homegoing of Gene Thomas Knight, age 86, who entered peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior on March 1, 2026, in Albany, GA. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Mathews Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM. Rev. Jerry Doree will officiate. Interment to follow at Floral Memory Gardens.

Born on March 22, 1939, in Leesburg, GA, and a 1958 graduate of Lee County High School, Mr. Knight lived a life defined by quiet strength, humble service, and unwavering faith. He found great joy in God’s creation—running the open roads, carefully tending his garden, and spending time around horses. These simple pleasures reflected his deep appreciation for the blessings the Lord placed before him each day.

Mr. Knight built a respected career in the electrical field and later faithfully served the community as an Electrical Inspector for the City of Albany. Known for his integrity, fairness, and strong work ethic, he took pride in work done right. His greatest testimony, however, was his walk with Christ. Mr. Knight faithfully served for many years as a Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church, where he was known for his servant’s heart, steady wisdom, and willingness to help wherever needed. Upon the closing of Calvary Baptist Church, Mr. Knight attended Amazing Grace Baptist Church, where his life continued to be a powerful example of faith in action. Above all, Mr. Knight was a devoted family man who loved deeply and faithfully. His legacy is one of steadfast love, dependable presence, and a life rooted firmly in the promises of God.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Sue Johnson Knight, his sweetheart since grade school and devoted wife of 67 years, his children, Tommy Knight (Lisa), David Knight, and Steve Knight, his grandchildren Melanie Knight Harris (Brad), Jordan Knight Raettig (Matt), Heather Knight Ethridge (Ryan), Cory Knight, Amber Turner (Jesse), Inga Aviles (Jonathan), and Kristen Campbell (Sean), and his many great-grandchildren, whom he loved deeply.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Florrie Knight, and his siblings, June L. Knight and Gerald Guy Knight.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Amazing Grace Baptist Church, or any charity of your choosing, in Mr. Knight’s memory. Amazing Grace Baptist Church 2217 Ledo Road Albany, GA 31707
