Freda Fox Hewitt, 88, of Mitchell County, GA, died April 14, 2024 at Seymour Southern Comfort Assisted Living Center in Bronwood, GA.


Funeral services will be held Thursday April 18, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Mathews Funeral Home.  Mr. Ross Powell will officiate.  Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.

 

Freda was born on June 7, 1935 in Lower Providence Township, PA to the late Fred and Helen Fox.  Her family moved to Southwest Georgia in her early youth.  She grew up in Plains, GA and graduated from Plains High School in 1952, played on the basketball team and was a cheerleader in the off season.   She loved both activities and her picture in her uniform still hangs on the wall at the Plains High School Museum. 

 

Freda married Thomas F. Hewitt, Sr and they were married for fifty four years.  Freda retired from Coats and Clark after twenty six years.  She was Baptized at and was a member of Mercedes Baptist Church.  Freda enjoyed going to the Senior Center and seeing all her friends.  They stayed in touch with each other as long as she was able and she never forgot her friends and she had many.  She loved to fish and enjoyed all types of seafood.  In her last days, she asked for just two fried Oysters.  She loved her family no matter what and she always wanted to know how they were and what they were doing. 

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. “Tom” Hewitt, Sr., her siblings, Thelma Bacon, Mildred Black, Larre’ Fox, James Fox, Shirley Hanes and Dorothy Peeples and a son-in-law, Dr. Howard H. Hendley.

 

Survivors include her children, Thomas F. “Tommy” Hewitt, Jr.,  Karen Weekley (Tommy) and Sharon Hendley, a brother, Terry Fox, (Jane), her grandchildren, Ashley Carson (Jared), Miranda Wells (Brad), Corey Hewitt, Liah Clifford (Shaun), Dylan Smith, Nick Weekley (Candice), Elizabeth Ott (Ryan) and Holden Hendley (Jessica), Jay Hewitt and Dylan Smith, fifteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm Thursday at Mathews Funeral Home.

 

Freda’s family would like to thank Priscilla Seymour and Lorraine Freeman and the entire staff at Seymour Southern Comforts.  They have been a true blessing, they family would have been lost without them.  The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the Georgia Hospice Care team, they stepped in and helped Freda in her final months of her life.  As they said, “Freda was an amazing woman”.
