Allan Wilson Russell

Allan Russell, 91, of Grayson, GA formally of Leesburg, GA, entered into his heavenly home on Wednesday February 15 at Abbey Hospice House in Social Circle, GA.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday February 25, 2023 at 11AM at Mathews Funeral Home.  Rev Ryan Stone is officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am prior to service at Mathews Funeral Home.

 

Allan was born in Long Island, New York and was the one and only child of Pearl and Frank Russell.  In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his daughters, Jenean Taylor and Celeste Gray and step-son, Craig Stone.

 

He joined the Navy in 1949 and served in the Korean War.  After he was discharged, he attended Florida State University and received his Master’s Degree in Social Work. After graduating, he worked for the State of Georgia in mental health in Milledgeville, GA. He then went to work for Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital where he helped develop the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program.

 

Upon his retirement in 1991 he became very active with the American Red Cross being deployed to many disasters including 911 and Oklahoma City bombing.  Allan was active in AARC where he served on the Board of Directors and was a member of Hi Roc Baptist Church in Conyers, GA

 

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Brenda, his daughters Sharron Yokley (Mahlon) and Wendy Allender (Rick), a step-daughter, Carol Taylor (Mike), 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
