 Obituary:

Charles Alton McDonald, 83, of Albany died Wednesday, July 07, 2010 at his residence after a long battle with cancer.  Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:00 P.M. at Mathews Funeral Home with interment to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Sylvester, GA.  Rev. William Collins and Rev. Leigh Ann Raynor will officiate.

Born April 1, 1927, in Jasper, FL to Ivey Arin McDonald and Doris Rodgers McDonald had resided in Albany since 1979.  He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy Air Transport during WWII.  Charles retired in 1993 from the MCLB after eleven years of service from the Engineer Branch.  Prior to that, he was a Design Engineer with Piper Aircraft Corp in Vero Beach, FL for many years before transferring to Ayres Corporation in Albany, GA in 1978.  He was a private pilot, builder and flyer of radio control airplanes and model cars.  He was a Rolls Royce Owner and a member of the Rolls Royce Owners Club of America and Artesian Car Club and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.  He and his wife of thirty one years, traveled to shows with their 1956 Rolls Royce Bentley and 1979 Silver Shadow.   He was a lover of classic/vintage cars and airplanes. 

Mr. McDonald was a good, kind and gentle man who placed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord and responded to God’s love and grace by trying to live his life according to the Ten Commandments.  He was a member of Porterfield United Methodist Church and Dr. Davis Kenny’s Sunday School Class.  He and his wife were Greeters at the 9:45 AM Alive Services on many Sunday mornings.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Duke McDonald of Albany,  a son, Ken McDonald and his wife, Brenda of Albany, a daughter, Sharon Barber and her husband, Bill of Albany, a daughter, Vickie Boles and her husband, Howard (Duff) of  Vero Beach, FL, a son, Mike McDonald and his wife, Terry of Orlando, FL, a step-son, Ben Owens and his wife Joy of Valdosta, GA, a sister, Jan Zunker and her husband, Jimmie of Houston, TX, fifteen grandchildren, two special caregivers, Tabias and Juanita, his hospice nurse, Selina and his loving cats, Tomas, PP, Minnie and Baby.

Mr. McDonald was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Charlotte McDonald and Margaret Crew and a brother, Virgil L (Buster) McDonald.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Mathews Funeral Home.
