Jerry Eugene Gresham, Sr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 9, 1940, to James Ralph Gresham and Mary Frances Collins Gresham. From an early age he learned the value of hard work, rising early to run a newspaper route, beginning at age seven. Throughout his years in school, he was a hard worker and worked full-time while in high school. Graduating from Bass High School in Atlanta in 1958, he had already learned that families had to pull together in order to make ends meet.
He entered the United States Air Force in 1959 and served for four years, completing his duty at Turner Air Force Base in Albany. He met and married his wife of almost 48 years while stationed in Albany.
Jerry was a food salesman for many years. He had worked for Albany Brokerage Company, Young-Merritt Brokerage Company and Federated Foods, Inc. where he worked out of Piggly Wiggly’s Vidalia, Georgia warehouse. He was presently employed by RPM Corporation where he worked in sales for the past eleven years.
Jerry loved the Lord and he loved people. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, attended the Men’s Bible Class and served as a trustee. He served on the Executive Committee of the Mallary Baptist Association and was a former trustee. He was currently serving as the church’s Brotherhood director and was involved in the prayer ministry of the church.
While his son served as pastor of Bryant Drive Baptist Church in Sylvester, he was an active member and helped work on the completion of the church’s first permanent building. Prior to that time, he was a longtime member of First Free Will Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir, served as a church trustee, and working for Master’s Men. He also helped clear the land when the church relocated to Westover Boulevard.
Jerry’s interests included his family, his church, yard work and he was also a big Georgia Bulldog and Nascar fan.
